The racial makeup of the city was 64.20% White, 25.36% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 3.65% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 2.19% from other races, and 3.63% from two or more races. 3.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,980 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
